Optical Doppler tomography (ODT) can now image labial blood flow with high resolution. This noninvasive technique accurately measures flow speed and direction in the microvasculature.

Area of Science:

  • Biomedical Optics
  • Medical Imaging
  • Microcirculation Research

Background:

  • Oral microvasculature changes are indicators of various diseases.
  • Optical Doppler tomography (ODT) integrates Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and laser Doppler flowmetry.
  • ODT provides high-resolution imaging with blood flow velocity and direction detection.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the feasibility of using ODT for imaging labial blood flow.
  • To characterize and measure blood flow in the microvasculature of the lips.
  • To evaluate ODT's potential for diagnosing oral diseases.

Main Methods:

  • A prototype ODT system with a 1300 nm diode light source was developed.
  • Phantom studies with Intralipid measured flow accuracy, achieving within 5% error.

Related Experiment Videos

  • In vivo imaging of the labial mucosa was performed on 9 healthy volunteers using a fiberoptic probe.
  • Main Results:

    • ODT successfully produced integrated OCT and Doppler velocity images of labial blood flow in all subjects.
    • In vivo labial blood flow velocities ranged from 8.2 to 53.2 mm/second.
    • The study generated the first known ODT images of the labial microvasculature.

    Conclusions:

    • ODT is a feasible noninvasive method for quantifying labial blood flow.
    • ODT provides high spatial resolution images, anatomical localization of vessels, and flow information.
    • ODT demonstrates high volumetric flow sensitivity, offering advantages for clinical applications.
