Insights
Simvastatin effectively lowers cholesterol in hypercholesterinemia patients. Beyond lipid reduction, it improves platelet function and offers broader cardiovascular benefits.
Area of Science:
- Cardiovascular Pharmacology
- Lipid Metabolism Research
Context:
- Hypercholesterinemia (dislipoproteinemia types II-A, II-B, IV) poses significant cardiovascular risk.
- Patients with coronary heart disease and stable angina were included in the study.
Purpose:
- To investigate the effects of Simvastatin on lipid metabolism.
- To evaluate Simvastatin's impact on platelet aggregation and vasoactive eicosanoids.
- To assess Simvastatin's pleiotropic effects in patients with hypercholesterinemia and coronary heart disease.
Summary:
- Simvastatin therapy led to normalized or borderline cholesterol levels in a majority of patients.
- Significant improvements were observed in thrombocyte aggregation indexes.
- The study highlights Simvastatin's hypolipidemic and pleiotropic activities.
Impact:
- Simvastatin demonstrates multifaceted benefits beyond cholesterol reduction.
- Findings support Simvastatin's role in managing cardiovascular risk factors.
- The study contributes to understanding the therapeutic mechanisms of statins.
Abstract:
Effect of Simvastatin on lipid metabolism, platelet aggregation properties and vasoactive eicosanoids content in blood plasma of patients with hypercholesterinemia (dislipoproteinemia II-A, II-B, and IV type) has been studied by the authors. 49 patients with coronary heart disease, stable angina of effort, II-III functional classes by NYHA have been observed. 57.1% of the patients had normal cholesterol levels (less 200 mg/dl) at the end of the therapy, 37.6% of the patients had reached border levels of cholesterol in their blood serum (200 to 240 mg/dl). It was established that beneficial effect of Simvastatin is associated not only with its hypolipidemic activity but also with pleothropic effect of the medication. Positive shifts in morphofunctional state and thrombocytes aggregation indexes have been noted in the process of the treatment.
