Summary

Spindle cell lipomas can express desmin, a protein typically found in muscle cells. This finding is important for accurate diagnosis, even in unusual cases.

Area of Science:

  • Pathology
  • Oncology
  • Dermatopathology

Background:

  • Immunohistochemical analysis of spindle cell lipomas has primarily focused on S-100 protein, CD34, and Bcl-2.
  • Limited data exists on the expression of desmin and actins in various spindle cell lipoma subtypes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the immunoexpression of desmin and different actin types in spindle cell lipomas.
  • To determine if desmin expression impacts the diagnostic criteria for spindle cell lipomas.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective immunohistochemical study of 25 spindle cell lipomas.
  • Archival formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues were analyzed.
  • Antibodies used included desmin, smooth muscle actin, muscle-specific actin, S-100 protein, CD34, and Bcl-2.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Desmin expression was observed in 16% (4/25) of spindle cell lipomas, with varying intensity and distribution.
  • Desmin positivity was noted in both classical and angiomatous subtypes.
  • CD34 was positive in all cases, Bcl-2 in 14/25, and no reactivity for S-100 protein or actins was found.

Conclusions:

  • A significant subset of spindle cell lipomas expresses desmin.
  • Desmin immunoreactivity does not preclude a diagnosis of spindle cell lipoma.
  • This finding is relevant for diagnosing lesions with nonclassical features or atypical locations.
