Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology and Surgical Innovation

Background:

  • Symptomatic cholecystolithiasis (gallstones) often requires surgical intervention.
  • Conventional cholecystectomy is a well-established treatment, but associated with postoperative pain and analgesic use.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the duration of postoperative pain and the type and amount of analgesics used between conventional and laparoscopic cholecystectomy for symptomatic cholecystolithiasis.

Main Methods:

  • A comparative study involving two groups of 50 patients each.
  • Patients were treated with either conventional cholecystectomy or laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
  • Outcomes measured included duration of postoperative pain and analgesic consumption.

Main Results:

  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy had an average operation time of 115.4 minutes, while conventional surgery averaged 78.1 minutes.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy experienced significantly less postoperative pain (1.13 days) compared to conventional surgery (2.7 days).
  • Eight patients (16%) who had laparoscopic cholecystectomy required no analgesics, and overall analgesic consumption was substantially lower.
  • Conclusions:

    • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy offers a significant advantage in reducing postoperative pain and the need for analgesics compared to conventional cholecystectomy.
    • This suggests improved patient recovery and comfort with the laparoscopic approach for gallstone disease.
