Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Traumatology
  • Biomechanical Engineering

Background:

  • Elbow stiffness and instability pose significant challenges in orthopedic treatment.
  • Traditional methods may have limitations in addressing complex elbow trauma.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of a mobile hinged elbow external fixator for treating elbow stiffness and instability.
  • To introduce a novel treatment approach for complex elbow injuries.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 30 patients with elbow trauma were treated using a mobile hinged Orthofix elbow fixator.
  • Follow-up was conducted on 26 patients, assessing range of motion (ROM) and Mayo elbow scores.

Main Results:

  • Significant improvement in elbow ROM and Mayo elbow scores was observed in patients with elbow stiffness post-fixator removal (P < 0.05).

Related Experiment Videos

  • For unstable fracture-dislocations, the fixator facilitated anatomical reduction and functional recovery, with 70% achieving excellent or good outcomes.
  • Most patients experienced minimal pain and returned to work, though some complications were noted.
  • Conclusions:

    • The mobile hinged elbow external fixator offers advantages including articular space distraction and stable fixation.
    • It enables early elbow mobilization, promoting fracture healing and post-operative recovery.
    • This device demonstrates successful outcomes in treating elbow stiffness and unstable elbow fracture-dislocations.
