Summary

Posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) is more common in older individuals, females, and those with myopia. PVD is also linked to surgical aphakia and occurs more often bilaterally.

Background:

  • Posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) is a common age-related condition affecting the vitreoretinal interface.
  • Understanding the prevalence and associated factors of PVD is crucial for managing associated ocular pathologies.
  • Previous studies on PVD have been limited by smaller sample sizes and retrospective designs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the frequency of posterior vitreous detachment (PVD).
  • To identify factors primarily and secondarily associated with PVD.
  • To correlate PVD presence with demographic and ophthalmic characteristics.

  • A prospective observational cohort study involving 1,481 subjects (mean age 63.45 years).

    • PVD was less frequent in nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION) (p = 0.038) and showed a trend towards lower frequency in diabetic retinopathy and neovascularization.

    Conclusions:

    • This large prospective study confirms previous findings on PVD prevalence and associated factors.
    • New insights into the pathophysiology of PVD and its role in retinal and optic disc lesions are provided.
    • Data supports the understanding of PVD as a significant factor in various ophthalmic conditions.
