Digestive diseases and sciences·2024

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Thoracic Surgery

Background:

  • Epiphrenic diverticula are rare outpouchings of the esophagus.
  • They are often associated with esophageal motility abnormalities.

Observation:

  • A 50-year-old male presented with a year of progressive vomiting and nocturnal cough.
  • Imaging revealed a supradiaphragmatic mass with air and solid components, later identified as a giant distal esophageal diverticulum with hiatal hernia.

Findings:

  • Esophageal manometry showed a non-specific esophageal motility disorder.
  • The patient underwent successful diverticulectomy via an abdominal approach with an uncomplicated recovery.

Implications:

  • This case underscores the diagnostic challenges and potential for misclassification of epiphrenic diverticula.

Related Experiment Videos

  • It highlights the significant prevalence of esophageal motility dysfunction in patients with epiphrenic diverticula, necessitating comprehensive evaluation.
