Solid-state ruthenium-99 NMR spectroscopy is feasible for characterizing diamagnetic ruthenium compounds. This study presents the first solid-state (99)Ru NMR investigations, highlighting its sensitivity to structural changes and identifying a reference standard.
Area of Science:
- Solid-state NMR Spectroscopy
- Inorganic Chemistry
- Materials Science
Background:
- Ruthenium-99 NMR spectroscopy is a powerful tool for characterizing solid compounds.
- Previous studies have primarily focused on paramagnetic ruthenium complexes.
- Solid-state NMR offers unique insights into the local electronic and structural environment of ruthenium nuclei.
Purpose of the Study:
- To demonstrate the feasibility of solid-state (99)Ru NMR spectroscopy for diamagnetic ruthenium compounds.
- To present the first solid-state (99)Ru NMR investigation of selected diamagnetic ruthenium complexes.
- To explore the sensitivity of (99)Ru NMR parameters to structural variations and identify potential reference materials.
Main Methods:
- Solid-state (99)Ru NMR spectroscopy was employed.
- Experimental spectra were analyzed to determine chemical shifts, quadrupolar coupling constants, and asymmetry parameters.
- Quantum chemical calculations were used to complement experimental data for Ru(3)(CO)(12).
Main Results:
- Solid-state (99)Ru NMR successfully characterized diamagnetic compounds: Ru(NH(3))(6)Cl(2), K(4)Ru(CN)(6).xH(2)O (x=0, 3), LaKRu(CN)(6), and Ru(3)(CO)(12).
- The (99)Ru NMR spectrum of solid Ru(NH(3))(6)Cl(2) is narrow, making it a suitable secondary reference standard.
- (99)Ru NMR parameters for K(4)Ru(CN)(6).xH(2)O were sensitive to hydration (x).
- For Ru(3)(CO)(12), magnetic shielding tensors and quadrupolar coupling constants were determined, revealing surprisingly small C(Q) values and providing information on tensor orientations.
Conclusions:
- Solid-state (99)Ru NMR spectroscopy is a viable and sensitive technique for characterizing diamagnetic ruthenium compounds.
- Ru(NH(3))(6)Cl(2) is proposed as an ideal secondary reference for solid-state (99)Ru NMR.
- The study provides valuable structural and electronic information about the investigated ruthenium complexes.

Raman Spectroscopy Instrumentation: Overview
The monochromatic laser source, typically using visible or near-infrared radiation, generates a highly focused beam of light. This light interacts with the molecules of the sample, scattering some of the light. Liquid and gaseous samples are usually tested in ordinary glass capillaries, while solids can be analyzed as powders packed in capillaries or as potassium...
