Summary

Central precocious puberty (CPP) is a condition causing early puberty, potentially reducing adult height. Treatment with gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists is effective and safe for preserving height and well-being.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Endocrinology
  • Reproductive Medicine
  • Growth Disorders

Background:

  • Central precocious puberty (CPP) involves early pubertal development before age 8 (girls) or 9 (boys).
  • It leads to accelerated growth, bone maturation, and often a compromised adult height.
  • Diagnosis requires clinical signs, bone age, pelvic ultrasound (girls), and hormonal evaluation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the diagnosis, treatment indications, and outcomes of central precocious puberty.
  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist therapy.

Main Methods:

  • Review of clinical signs, bone age, pelvic echography, and hormonal data for diagnosis.
  • Assessment of treatment indications based on auxologic and psychosocial factors.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Analysis of long-term data from GnRH agonist treatment in CPP patients.
  • Main Results:

    • GnRH agonists effectively suppress pituitary gonadal function in CPP patients.
    • Treatment preserves height potential and improves final adult height in many cases, especially in younger children.
    • GnRH agonist therapy demonstrates a good safety profile with minimal adverse effects.

    Conclusions:

    • GnRH agonist treatment is a valuable and safe option for managing central precocious puberty.
    • It helps prevent reduced adult height and psychosocial issues associated with early puberty.
    • Future research may explore combination therapies and GnRH antagonists for improved outcomes.
