Summary

This study investigated visual perception, finding that stimuli presented to the left eye appeared larger overall. Handedness, not eye dominance, influenced this size perception bias.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To replicate the Coren and Porac (1976) finding on eye dominance and perceived object size.
  • To investigate potential influences of visual field and handedness on size perception.

Main Methods:

  • Haploscopic presentation of two circles using a binocular three-field tachistoscope.
  • Stimuli presented to right/left visual half-field and upper/lower visual field, one to each eye.
  • 43 subjects reported perceived size differences over 120 trials each.

Main Results:

  • Overall, stimuli presented to the left eye were perceived as significantly larger than those in the right eye.
  • No significant association was found between eye dominance and perceived size differences.
  • A significant association was observed with handedness: left-handed subjects favored the right eye, right-handed subjects favored the left eye.

Conclusions:

  • The Coren and Porac (1976) finding regarding eye dominance and perceived size could not be replicated.
  • Perceived size of visual stimuli is significantly influenced by handedness, not eye dominance.
  • This suggests a complex interplay between sensory input and neural processing related to lateralization.
