Summary

Background:

  • 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) is a persistent environmental contaminant.
  • Animal studies link TCDD exposure to delayed pubertal development.
  • The Seveso disaster in 1976 resulted in the highest human TCDD exposure levels.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between TCDD exposure and age at menarche.
  • To assess reproductive health risks in women exposed to TCDD postnatally but prepubertally.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective cohort study (Seveso Women's Health Study).
  • Analysis of serum TCDD levels from 1976.
  • Examined age at menarche in 282 premenarcheal women at the time of exposure.
