The Swedish VIPS model implementation improved nurses' knowledge and confidence in nursing documentation and care planning. While motivation slightly decreased, overall attitudes towards documentation remained positive.

Area of Science:

  • Nursing Informatics
  • Healthcare Quality Improvement
  • Clinical Documentation

Background:

  • Copenhagen University Hospital adopted Joint Commission International Accreditation standards in 2000.
  • These standards necessitate systematic patient care assessment and written nursing care plans.
  • The Swedish VIPS (well-being, integrity, prevention, safety) model was introduced to structure nursing documentation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore nurses' attitudes towards nursing documentation.
  • To assess nurses' knowledge of the VIPS documentation system.
  • To evaluate the impact of a special implementation program for the VIPS model.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective, comparative, quasi-experimental design with a study group (n=72) and control group (n=57).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Nurses' attitudes assessed via self-evaluated questionnaires.
  • Knowledge of the documentation system evaluated using multiple-choice tests.
  • Main Results:

    • The study group showed significantly greater conviction in their knowledge and routine use of care plans.
    • Nurses in the study group performed better on knowledge tests compared to the control group.
    • Both groups shared positive attitudes towards nursing documentation, though the study group had slightly lower motivation.

    Conclusions:

    • The VIPS model implementation program positively impacted nursing documentation.
    • The VIPS model enhanced nurses' understanding of the nursing process and systematic documentation.
    • The study supports the effectiveness of structured models in improving nursing documentation quality.
