Insights
Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) protein expression is significantly elevated in patients experiencing acute myocardial infarction. Conversely, individuals with normal coronary arteries exhibit lower HO-1 levels, suggesting its role in myocardial infarction.
Area of Science:
- Biochemistry
- Cardiology
- Immunology
Background:
- Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) is an enzyme involved in heme catabolism.
- HO-1 plays a role in cellular protection against oxidative stress.
- Changes in HO-1 expression may be linked to cardiovascular diseases.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the expression levels of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) in patients diagnosed with acute myocardial infarction.
- To compare HO-1 expression in acute myocardial infarction patients with those having coronary heart disease but no acute event, and healthy controls.
Main Methods:
- Inclusion of 45 acute myocardial infarction patients, 50 coronary heart disease patients (without acute myocardial infarction), and 40 healthy controls.
- Isolation of monocytes and lymphocytes from patient blood samples.
- Quantification of HO-1 protein expression using immunohistochemistry, Western blot, and a computer picture analyzing system.
Main Results:
- HO-1 protein expression was localized to the cytoplasm.
- Significantly higher HO-1 protein expression levels were observed in acute myocardial infarction patients compared to those without (P<0.01).
- Lower HO-1 protein expression levels were found in patients with normal coronary arteries.
Conclusions:
- Acute myocardial infarction is associated with increased heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) protein expression.
- Normal coronary arteries correlate with reduced HO-1 protein expression.
- HO-1 may serve as a potential biomarker in acute myocardial infarction.
Objective:
To investigate changes in heme oxygenase-1(HO-1) in patients with acute myocardial infarction.
Methods:
Forty-five patients with acute myocardial infarction and 50 with coronary heart disease (diagnosed by coronary angiography) but without acute myocardial infarction were included in this study, and another 40 patients with normal coronary artery as controls. Levels of HO-1 protein expression in monocyte and lymphocyte isolated from the patients were determined by immunohistochemistry and Western blot. Computer picture analyzing system was also used to measure levels of HO-1 protein expression.
Results:
HO-1 protein expression was located in the cytoplasm. The levels of HO-1 protein expression in patients with acute myocardial infarction were significantly higher than those without acute myocardial infarction (P<0.01). In addition, low levels of HO-1 protein expression were observed in patients with normal coronary artery.
Conclusion:
There is a higher expression of HO-1 in patients with acute myocardial infarction, and a lower expression in patients with normal coronary artery.
