Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Cognitive Science

Background:

  • The concept of the self is multifaceted, with theories suggesting a 'plural self' comprising multiple identities or voices.
  • Inner voices can range from neutral to distressing, and their content may influence psychological well-being.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between the subjective experience of a plural self and the presence of violent inner voices.
  • To explore potential correlations between self-perception and auditory hallucinations or intrusive thoughts.

Main Methods:

  • A correlational study was conducted with 182 undergraduate students.
  • Participants completed the Plural Self Scale to assess their perception of self.
  • A separate scale measured the frequency and characteristics of violent inner voices experienced by participants.

Main Results:

  • A statistically significant positive association was found between scores on the Plural Self Scale and scores on the measure of violent inner voices.
  • Individuals reporting a more fragmented or pluralistic sense of self also reported a higher prevalence of violent inner voices.

Conclusions:

  • The findings suggest a potential link between the structure of self-perception and the experience of distressing inner voices.
  • Further research is warranted to understand the underlying mechanisms and clinical implications of this association.
