Poliomyelitis is caused by poliovirus, a small, non-enveloped, positive-sense RNA virus of the Picornaviridae family and Enterovirus genus. Summary

Measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccination does not increase the risk of autism or pervasive developmental disorders. This study found no association between MMR vaccine and developmental disorders in children.

Background:

  • Public concern regarding measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccination and autism has decreased vaccine coverage.
  • Investigated the potential association between MMR vaccination and autism or other pervasive developmental disorders.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if MMR vaccination is linked to an increased risk of autism or pervasive developmental disorders.
  • To address public health concerns and inform vaccination policies.

Main Methods:

  • A matched case-control study was conducted using the UK General Practice Research Database.
  • Included 1294 cases diagnosed with pervasive developmental disorders and 4469 matched controls.
  • Data analyzed for MMR vaccination timing relative to diagnosis.

Main Results:

  • No statistically significant association was found between MMR vaccination and pervasive developmental disorders (OR 0.86, 95% CI 0.68-1.09).
  • Results remained consistent when analyzing subgroups, including autism diagnoses and early vaccination.
  • Analysis also considered the period before widespread media coverage of the MMR-autism hypothesis.

Conclusions:

  • The study concludes that MMR vaccination is not associated with an increased risk of pervasive developmental disorders.
  • Findings support the safety of the MMR vaccine in relation to neurodevelopmental outcomes.
