Atrial, B-type, and C-type natriuretic peptides do not alter arterial baroreceptor reflex function in conscious sheep. These findings clarify the role of natriuretic peptides in cardiovascular regulation.

Background:

  • Atrial and B-type natriuretic peptides (ANP, BNP) influence vagal afferent reflexes, but their impact on arterial baroreceptor reflexes is debated.
  • The effects of C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) on arterial baroreflexes are currently unknown.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of ANP, BNP, and CNP on the arterial baroreceptor reflex function.
  • To clarify the role of natriuretic peptides in modulating blood pressure and heart rate regulation via baroreflexes.

Main Methods:

  • Conscious sheep received intravenous infusions of ANP, BNP, or CNP (10 pmol kg(-1) min(-1)).
  • Steady-state mean arterial blood pressure-heart rate (MAP-HR) relationships were determined using phenylephrine and nitroprusside injections.
  • Baroreflex sigmoid parameters were analyzed in the absence and presence of natriuretic peptide infusions.

Main Results:

  • Infusion of ANP, BNP, or CNP did not significantly alter any parameter of the steady-state arterial baroreflex MAP-HR relationship.
  • These results indicate that moderate doses of these natriuretic peptides do not impair baroreflex sensitivity.

Conclusions:

  • Arterial baroreceptor-heart rate reflex function remains intact in conscious sheep during moderate infusions of ANP, BNP, and CNP.
  • Natriuretic peptides, at the tested doses, do not significantly affect the primary mechanism of short-term blood pressure regulation via the arterial baroreflex.
