Summary

Apolipoprotein E (apo E) genotype E3/4 was less common in Turkish stroke patients, while E2/3 was more frequent. No link was found between the apo E epsilon4 allele and stroke risk in this population.

Area of Science:

  • Genetics
  • Neurology
  • Cardiovascular Disease

Background:

  • Human apolipoprotein E (apo E) alleles are polymorphic and linked to coronary heart disease and Alzheimer's disease.
  • Previous studies show varied associations between apo E genotype and stroke across different populations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between apolipoprotein E (apo E) genotypes and stroke risk in a Turkish population from eastern Turkey.

Main Methods:

  • Genotyping of apo E alleles and frequencies were determined using polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism.
  • A case-control study was conducted with 103 stroke patients and 126 age-matched healthy controls from the same geographic region.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • A reduced frequency of the E3/4 genotype was observed in stroke patients compared to controls.
  • An elevated frequency of the E2/3 genotype was found in individuals with a history of stroke.
  • No significant association was detected between the apo E epsilon4 allele and stroke in this cohort.
  • Conclusions:

    • The study suggests divergent effects of APOE alleles and genotypes on stroke risk within the studied Turkish population.
    • The observed associations may be influenced by interactions with other genetic factors.
    • Further research across diverse populations is necessary to fully elucidate the role of APOE in stroke.
