Summary

This study reports the first case of an angioleiomyoma, a benign smooth muscle tumor, found within the testis. Orchidectomy was performed due to the inability to distinguish it from malignant testicular tumors via imaging.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Pathology
  • Surgical Oncology

Background:

  • Angioleiomyomas are typically benign smooth muscle neoplasms found in the superficial soft tissues.
  • While rare, angioleiomyomas have been documented in various deeper tissues.
  • Intratesticular lesions are a concern for malignancy, necessitating accurate diagnosis.

Observation:

  • A 58-year-old male presented with a painless testicular swelling.
  • Imaging studies were insufficient to definitively differentiate the lesion from malignant testicular tumors.
  • Surgical intervention (orchidectomy) was deemed the most appropriate management strategy.

Findings:

  • The first documented case of an intratesticular angioleiomyoma is presented.
  • Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of angioleiomyoma.

Related Experiment Videos

  • This benign tumor presented as a testicular mass.
  • Implications:

    • This case expands the known anatomical locations for angioleiomyomas.
    • It highlights the diagnostic challenge in differentiating benign intratesticular lesions from malignancies.
    • Further research may be needed to develop non-invasive diagnostic methods for testicular masses.
