Yersinia enterocolitica enteritis in rabbits did not alter intestinal smooth muscle biomechanics. This study found no significant differences in basal or active tension development in infected versus control groups.

Background:

  • Yersinia enterocolitica (YE) is a bacterial pathogen causing enteritis.
  • The impact of YE enteritis on intestinal smooth muscle biomechanics remains unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of Yersinia enterocolitica enteritis on the biomechanical properties of rabbit intestinal smooth muscle.
  • To assess changes in muscle tension and response to stimuli following infection.

Main Methods:

  • New Zealand White rabbits were infected with YE or sham-infected.
  • Longitudinal smooth muscle strips from different intestinal segments were isolated.
  • Isometric tension, basal and active length-tension curves, and dose-response to carbachol and KCl were measured.
