Background:

  • Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common disorder characterized by repeated upper airway collapse during sleep.
  • Current treatments for OSA have limitations, necessitating exploration of alternative pharmacotherapies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of oral theophylline in treating patients with documented obstructive sleep apnea.
  • To assess the impact of theophylline on apnea-hypopnea events and sleep quality.

Main Methods:

  • A double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover trial involving twelve OSA patients.
  • Patients received oral theophylline (800 mg nightly) or placebo for four weeks, followed by overnight polysomnography.
