Ergonomics in the workplace: evaluating and modifying jobs
1Industrial Ergonomics Consultant, Lafayette, CA 94549.
Abstract:
The process outlined above works. The more comfortable ergonomists become with the problem-solving methodology, the more efficient and effective they become. By applying good problem-solving analysis and synthesis techniques to ergonomic problems, engineers, physicians, and therapists can all contribute significantly to the solutions. Decision-makers within factories, office buildings, and corporate headquarters are beginning to look to trained ergonomists and healthcare professionals with ergonomic experience for help. The research presently being conducted in ergonomics around the country serves as the basis for the evaluation of the data collected. However, good job analysis and problem-solving are the primary cornerstones of ergonomics and are ones that require not only education but also experience in order to be most effective. In a field as complex and multidisciplinary as ergonomics, it is important to recognize the benefits of other disciplines. Problem-solving is often most effective when approached in a cooperative fashion. The industrial client and the field of ergonomics are often best served by a multidisciplinary team.
