Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Pediatric Ophthalmology

Background:

  • Posterior scleritis is an inflammatory eye condition.
  • Adult posterior scleritis often involves systemic disease and specific ocular findings.

Observation:

  • Four adolescent boys diagnosed with posterior scleritis were studied.
  • These patients presented with diminished visual acuity, ocular pain, and exudative retinal detachments.
  • Distinct from adult cases, these boys lacked systemic disease and typical adult-associated ocular findings.

Findings:

  • Diagnostic imaging revealed choroidal and scleral thickening.
  • Fluorescein angiography showed multiple pinpoint leaks and patchy staining.
  • No underlying systemic disease was identified in any patient.

Implications:

  • Adolescent posterior scleritis represents a unique subgroup.
  • Prompt treatment with anti-inflammatory medications, including corticosteroids, led to good visual recovery.
  • This suggests a potentially distinct pathophysiology and treatment response in pediatric cases.
