Summary

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients can have elevated immunoglobulin E (IgE) and antinuclear IgE autoantibodies. However, this does not indicate an association with allergy or increased IgE antibodies to common allergens.

Background:

  • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disorder marked by autoantibodies and immune complexes.
  • Previous studies suggested a link between SLE and Th2 immune responses or allergy.
  • The role of IgE in SLE pathogenesis remains unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels and specific IgE autoantibodies in SLE patients.
  • To explore the presence of antinuclear IgE autoantibodies in SLE.
  • To assess the association between SLE and allergic sensitization.

Main Methods:

  • Serum IgE and IgE antibodies to aeroallergens were measured using automated enzyme-linked fluorescent assay.
  • Antinuclear IgE autoantibodies were detected via indirect immunofluorescence on HEp-2 cells.

  • Serum anti-IgE IgG autoantibodies were quantified using immunocapture ELISA.
  • Main Results:

    • 33% of SLE patients exhibited elevated total IgE levels (median 394 IU/ml).
    • Only 9.5% of SLE patients had IgE antibodies to aeroallergens, unlike 100% of the atopic control group.
    • 81% of SLE patients showed antinuclear IgE autoantibodies, often with a fine speckled pattern.

    Conclusions:

    • Elevated IgE and antinuclear IgE autoantibodies can occur in SLE patients independently of clinical allergy.
    • The findings do not support a direct association between SLE and allergic sensitization to common aeroallergens.
