Computed radiography (CR) mammography, using photostimulable phosphors, offers a cost-effective digital alternative to screen-film mammography. Despite some workflow challenges, CR mammography is a viable option for breast imaging.

Area of Science:

  • Radiology
  • Medical Imaging
  • Digital Health

Background:

  • Digital mammography systems are increasingly adopted in North America.
  • Photostimulable phosphor (PSP)-based full-field digital mammography, known as computed radiography (CR), mimics conventional screen-film mammography.
  • CR offers a pathway to digital mammography using existing equipment, potentially reducing costs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the system performance of a PSP-based CR mammography system.
  • To compare CR mammography performance metrics with established benchmarks.
  • To assess the clinical viability of CR mammography as an alternative to screen-film mammography.

Main Methods:

  • System performance was assessed using modulation transfer function (MTF) and detective quantum efficiency (DQE) metrics.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Evaluations were conducted using specific X-ray beam parameters (26 kVp, 0.03 mm Mo filtration) and phantom conditions (4.5 cm tissue attenuation).
  • Clinical experience was gathered through an Institutional Review Board (IRB)-approved research trial.
  • Main Results:

    • Key performance metrics included MTF(2.5 mm⁻¹) = 0.5, DQE(2.5 mm⁻¹) = 0.3, MTF(5.0 mm⁻¹) = 0.2, and DQE(5.0 mm⁻¹) = 0.05 at 15 mR incident exposure.
    • Slightly improved DQE values were observed with a 32 kVp beam and 0.025 mm Rh filtration.
    • CR mammography demonstrated advantages in cost savings and adaptability to existing mammography units.

    Conclusions:

    • CR mammography using PSP technology is a technically sound and clinically viable alternative to conventional screen-film mammography.
    • While CR offers cost benefits and utilizes existing infrastructure, workflow considerations such as cassette handling and processing time require attention.
    • The study supports the integration of CR mammography into clinical practice for breast cancer screening and diagnosis.
