Summary

This study compared two surgical approaches to modify the maxillary sinus in rabbits. One group had their natural ostium enlarged (osteoplasty), while another had a window created away from the ostium (antrostomy). Infection rates were measured at 14 and 84 days post-surgery. The osteoplasty group had significantly higher infection rates than the antrostomy group and control groups. The findings suggest that enlarging the natural ostium increases infection risk, while creating a distant window does not. The study highlights the importance of anatomical considerations in surgical planning for sinus procedures.
