Summary

Fetal aneuploidy is less common in recurrent miscarriage than in sporadic miscarriage. This suggests recurrent aneuploidy contributes to recurrent miscarriage in only a small number of patients.

Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Medicine
  • Genetics
  • Obstetrics

Background:

  • Recurrent miscarriage (RM) is a complex condition with various potential causes.
  • The role of fetal aneuploidy in RM is debated, with some studies suggesting a high frequency and others questioning its significance.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between fetal aneuploidy and recurrent miscarriage.
  • To determine if fetal aneuploidy is more prevalent in women with recurrent miscarriage compared to those with sporadic miscarriage.

Main Methods:

  • Karyotype analysis using standard G-banding techniques was performed on abortuses.
  • Recurrent miscarriage cases (n=135) and sporadic miscarriage controls (n=150) were included.
  • Abortus karyotypes were obtained for analysis.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Abortus aneuploidy was found in 25.4% of recurrent miscarriage cases and 42.1% of sporadic miscarriage controls.
  • The odds of aneuploidy were lower in recurrent miscarriage cases (OR 0.47).
  • No significant association between aneuploidy and age was observed in either group.

Conclusions:

  • Abortus aneuploidy occurred significantly less often in recurrent miscarriage patients than in sporadic miscarriages.
  • The observed rate of aneuploidy was lower than previously reported.
  • Recurrent aneuploidy may contribute to recurrent miscarriage in a limited subset of patients.
