Summary

Pneumonectomy, the removal of an entire lung, is feasible in companion animals. Postoperative outcomes and complications in dogs and cats mirrored those seen in human patients.

Background:

Pneumonectomy, the surgical removal of an entire lung, is a known procedure in human medicine.
Limited data exists on the surgical technique and outcomes of pneumonectomy in companion animals.
This study investigates pneumonectomy for pulmonary or pleural disease in dogs and cats.

Observation:

Pneumonectomy was performed on three dogs and one cat.
One dog experienced immediate postoperative mortality due to respiratory insufficiency.
Two animals survived the perioperative period with complications: cardiac issues in the cat and gastrointestinal problems in a dog.

Findings:

Left- and right-sided pneumonectomy is technically feasible in companion animals.

The overall complication rate and types observed in this small animal series were comparable to human literature.

Survival beyond the perioperative period was achieved in 75% of the cases.

Implications:

Pneumonectomy can be considered a viable surgical option for specific pulmonary or pleural conditions in companion animals.
Understanding potential complications, such as cardiac and gastrointestinal issues, is crucial for managing these cases.
Further research with larger cohorts is warranted to refine surgical protocols and improve long-term outcomes.
