Area of Science:

  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Pediatric Dentistry
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Congenital epulis is a rare, benign tumor of the newborn oral cavity.
  • It typically presents as a pedunculated mass on the gingiva, potentially causing feeding difficulties.

Observation:

  • A 2-day-old full-term newborn presented with a pedunculated mass on the mandibular gingiva.
  • The mass interfered with feeding, necessitating intervention.

Findings:

  • Surgical excision of the mass was performed under general anesthesia.
  • Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of congenital epulis.

Implications:

  • Congenital epulis can be successfully treated with complete surgical excision.
  • Early diagnosis and intervention ensure favorable outcomes for affected newborns.
