Summary

This study reports the first case of Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) disease in a dog, identified through lymph node biopsy and confirmed by advanced diagnostic techniques. This finding highlights potential new roles for domestic animals in the epidemiology of fungal diseases.

Background:

  • Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is a severe granulomatous disease caused by *Paracoccidioides brasiliensis*, primarily affecting humans.
  • While PCM infection is documented in animals, clinical disease is rare, with previous reports mainly in armadillos.

Observation:

  • A female adult Doberman presented with cervical lymphadenomegaly.
  • Histopathological examination revealed active PCM with characteristic fungal forms and granulomatous inflammation.

Findings:

  • Immunohistochemistry using anti-gp43 antibody and nested PCR confirmed the PCM diagnosis.
  • This case represents the first documented instance of clinical PCM disease in a domestic dog.

Implications:
