Insights
Chronic kidney disease increases risks for patients undergoing carotid artery stenting. This condition is linked to higher rates of death, stroke, and heart attack within six months post-procedure.
Area of Science:
- Cardiovascular Medicine
- Nephrology
Background:
- Carotid artery stenting is a common procedure to prevent stroke.
- Chronic kidney disease is a growing public health concern.
- The impact of chronic kidney disease on carotid artery stenting outcomes is not fully understood.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the effect of chronic kidney disease on patients undergoing carotid artery stenting.
- To determine if chronic kidney disease is a risk factor for adverse events after carotid artery stenting.
Main Methods:
- Single-center retrospective analysis.
- Inclusion of patients who underwent carotid artery stenting.
- Comparison of outcomes between patients with and without chronic kidney disease.
Main Results:
- Chronic kidney disease was associated with increased periprocedural risks.
- Patients with chronic kidney disease had higher rates of death, stroke, or myocardial infarction at 6 months post-stenting.
Conclusions:
- Chronic kidney disease is a significant risk factor for adverse outcomes after carotid artery stenting.
- Further research is needed to explore strategies for mitigating these risks.
Abstract:
We performed a single-center retrospective analysis evaluating the effect of chronic kidney disease among patients who underwent carotid artery stenting. The presence of chronic kidney disease is associated with higher periprocedural and 6-month death, stroke, or myocardial infarction after carotid artery stenting.
