Background:

  • Limited academic literature exists on patient experiences following a hepatitis C diagnosis.
  • Understanding patient perspectives on doctor explanations and support referrals is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate patient experiences of receiving a hepatitis C diagnosis.
  • To analyze the quality of information and support provided by doctors at diagnosis.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study involving 504 individuals with hepatitis C infection in New South Wales, Australia.

Main Results:

  • Nearly one-third of participants diagnosed between 1989-2001 received no explanation from their doctor.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Women and those diagnosed earlier were more likely to report no explanation or post-test counseling.
  • Improved information dissemination (pamphlets, treatment info) observed for diagnoses from 1997-2001.
  • Conclusions:

    • Evidence suggests an increase in hepatitis C information provided by doctors in the late 1990s.
    • Ongoing efforts are necessary to enhance doctor-provided information and specialist referrals for new hepatitis C diagnoses.
