Background:

Previous research indicated left unilateral spatial neglect (LUSN) patients fixate the right side of a line during bisection.
This fixation occurs without leftward exploration, suggesting a skewed perception of the line's center.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the leftward search patterns of LUSN patients after line bisection.
To understand how LUSN affects the search for the line's left endpoint.

Main Methods:

Nine patients diagnosed with LUSN participated.
Eye-tracking technology monitored their search patterns after marking the subjective midpoint of a line.

Main Results:

Patients could search leftward beyond their subjective midpoint to locate the perceived left endpoint.

Related Experiment Videos

Initial search fixations were consistently near a point left of the subjective midpoint.

Severe neglect cases showed laborious leftward searches, often failing to reach the true left endpoint (80% of trials).

Conclusions:

LUSN patients' subjective line perception extends equally on both sides of their marked midpoint.
This skewed perception significantly impedes accurate leftward search and endpoint identification in LUSN.
