Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Adolescent Psychology
  • Educational Interventions

Background:

  • School-based interventions offer a unique setting for addressing child and adolescent health issues.
  • Adolescent alcohol and other drug (AOD) use is a significant public health concern requiring accessible interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To synthesize current knowledge on effective school-based interventions for adolescent AOD use.
  • To identify and propose solutions for challenges in implementing and evaluating these interventions.

Main Methods:

  • Conducted a broad literature review (1990-present) on school-based interventions for child/adolescent problems.
  • Performed an exhaustive review of Student Assistance Programs (SAPs) for AOD intervention.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Identified ten key components of effective school-based interventions.
  • Discussed six common dilemmas in school-based AOD intervention research.
  • Extracted potential solutions from an ongoing SAP randomized clinical trial.

Conclusions:

  • School-based AOD interventions present advantages over traditional clinic-based approaches.
  • Implementing and evaluating interventions in schools involves unique challenges.
  • These challenges can be successfully navigated with appropriate guidance and persistence.
