Background:

  • Group G Streptococcus (GGS) is an important cause of severe infections, including bacteremia.
  • GGS possess surface proteins homologous to the Streptococcus pyogenes M protein, which are virulence factors.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To retrospectively analyze the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients with GGS bacteremia.
  • To investigate the emm types and identify potential risk factors for recurrent GGS bacteremia.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective case series of patients with GGS bacteremia from 1989 to 2000.
  • Analysis of patient demographics, underlying diseases, infection sources, and clinical outcomes.
  • emm typing was performed on available GGS isolates.

  • Ninety-four cases of GGS bacteremia were identified in 84 patients, with a median age of 62 years.
  • The majority of patients (92%) had underlying diseases, primarily malignancy (35%) and diabetes mellitus (35%).
  • Cellulitis was the most frequent source (61%), and 13 emm types, including two novel ones, were identified.

Conclusions:

  • Recurrent GGS bacteremia, previously undescribed for invasive Group A Streptococcus, was observed in six patients.
  • Recurrent bacteremia was associated with chronic lymphatic disorders and potentially with emm type stG840.0.
