Background:

  • Staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs) are superantigens produced by Staphylococcus bacteria.
  • SE intoxication symptoms depend on the exposure route (ingestion, inhalation).

Observation:

  • Three laboratory workers experienced symptoms after ocular exposure to staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB).
  • Symptoms included conjunctivitis and localized swelling within 1-6 hours.
  • Two individuals also reported gastrointestinal symptoms, suggesting indirect exposure routes.

Findings:

  • Ocular exposure to SEB can cause conjunctivitis and localized swelling.
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms may occur following ocular or indirect cutaneous SEB exposure.
  • This is the first report of ocular SEB exposure symptoms.
