  • Otolaryngologists, plastic/maxillofacial, and ophthalmic surgeons frequently use both loupes and microscopes.
  • Cardiothoracic and pediatric surgeons primarily use loupes; neurosurgeons primarily use microscopes.
  • General, urology, orthopedic, and gynecologic surgeons are infrequent users, preferring loupes.

Conclusions:

  • Distinct patterns of intraoperative magnification use exist across surgical disciplines.
  • Anticipating surgical equipment needs, particularly magnification devices, is feasible based on specialty.
