Area of Science:

  • Traditional East Asian medicine
  • Preventive healthcare
  • Health promotion

Background:

  • Yangsaeng is a traditional healthcare regimen focused on health promotion and illness prevention.
  • It aims to achieve a long and healthy life through specific principles and methods.
  • There was a need for a standardized tool to measure adherence to Yangsaeng principles.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a reliable and valid measurement tool for Yangsaeng.
  • To assess the extent to which individuals practice Yangsaeng.

Main Methods:

  • Content validity was established through three rounds of expert review (8 experts).
  • Construct validity was assessed using factor analysis.
  • Criterion-related validity was verified using established tools: CMCHS V1.0 and KoHSME V1.0.

Main Results:

  • A 31-item tool was developed, encompassing 8 factors: Morality, Mind, Diet, Activity & Rest, Exercise, Seasonal, Sleep, and Sex Life Yangsaeng.
  • The tool explained 61.76% of the variance.
  • High reliability was demonstrated with a Cronbach's alpha of .89 for the overall tool and .68–.82 for individual factors. Item-total correlations were ≥ .40.

Conclusions:

  • The developed Yangsaeng measurement tool demonstrates good reliability and validity.
  • It is suitable for evaluating individuals' adherence to Yangsaeng practices.
  • This tool can aid in promoting healthier lifestyles through traditional healthcare principles.
