Summary

A rare, large intracerebral calcification from the choroid plexus caused severe headaches in a 27-year-old woman. Surgical removal confirmed a non-neoplastic, non-inflammatory calcified choroid plexus.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Radiology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Small choroid plexus calcifications are common.
  • Large, single intracerebral calcifications from this origin are exceptionally rare.

Observation:

  • A 27-year-old woman presented with chronic right temporal headaches.
  • CT revealed a large (3x3x4 cm) calcified mass in the right temporal region, extending to the skull base.

Findings:

  • Surgical excision of the mass was complete.
  • Histopathology revealed a markedly calcified choroid plexus without neoplasia or inflammation.

Implications:

  • This case highlights a rare cause of severe headache.
  • Discusses potential pathogenetic mechanisms for large choroid plexus calcifications.
