Summary

Diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) quantifies normal human brain diffusion. Apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and anisotropy index (AI) values are constant across individuals, aiding lesion severity assessment.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroimaging
  • Diffusion Weighted Imaging (DWI)
  • Quantitative MRI

Background:

  • Diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) is crucial for evaluating brain pathologies, particularly hyperacute stroke.
  • Quantification of diffusion conditions in the normal human brain is increasingly important.
  • Understanding physiological diffusion parameters aids in diagnosing cerebral pathologies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Investigate apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and anisotropy index (AI) in the normal human brain.
  • Establish physiological ADC values for ADC mapping across different brain regions.
  • Provide reference values for normal brain diffusion parameters.

Main Methods:

  • Analyzed 22 regions of interest (ROIs) in ADC maps from 53 healthy volunteers.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Measured diffusion parameters in gray matter and white matter of frontal, parietal, and occipital lobes.
  • Included corpus callosum and lateral ventricles in the analysis.
  • Main Results:

    • Apparent diffusion varied significantly across different brain regions.
    • Isotropic diffusion observed in subcortical white matter (ADC: 525 x 10(-8) mm2/s, AI: 0.05) and gray matter (ADC: 1486 x 10(-8) mm2/s, AI: 0.05).
    • Anisotropic diffusion found in periventricular white matter (ADC: 408 x 10(-8) mm2/s, AI: 0.34) and corpus callosum (ADC: 799 x 10(-8) mm2/s, AI: 0.77).

    Conclusions:

    • Apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) is intra- and interindividually constant in adults, irrespective of sex or age (mean age: 62+/-9.4 years).
    • ADC measurements can serve as an index for lesion severity.
    • Findings provide normative data for ADC and AI in various brain regions.
