Proteomics

A proteome is the entire set of proteins that a cell type produces. We can study proteomes using the knowledge of genomes because genes code for mRNAs, and the mRNAs encode proteins. Although mRNA analysis is a step in the right direction, not all mRNAs are translated into proteins.
Proteomics is the study of proteomes' function. It involves the large-scale systematic study of the proteome to denote the protein complement expressed by a genome. Scientist Mark Wilkins coined the term proteomics...

Background:

  • Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) detection and treatment can be improved with better serological markers and high-risk patient screening.
  • Proteomics provides a powerful approach for discovering biomarkers essential for early HCC detection and diagnosis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review proteomic technologies and their application in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) research.
  • To provide a framework for understanding the potential and challenges of translating proteomic discoveries into diagnostic tests for HCC.

Main Methods:

  • Proteomic-based profiling to delineate global changes in protein expression patterns.
  • Analysis of protein expression in normal, precancerous, and early-stage tumor tissues.
  • Utilizing tools such as 2-DE, LC, mass spectrometry, and protein microarrays for biomarker discovery.

Main Results:

  • Proteomic profiling reveals global changes in protein expression due to various regulatory mechanisms.
  • Identification of tumor antigens eliciting humoral responses can lead to new HCC screening markers.
  • Current proteomic technologies offer diverse approaches for biomarker and drug target discovery in HCC.

Conclusions:

  • Refined serological markers and proteomics hold significant promise for enhancing early HCC detection and patient outcomes.
  • Translating proteomic discoveries into clinical diagnostic tests for HCC presents both opportunities and challenges.
