Area of Science:

  • Biomedical Informatics
  • Database Management
  • Data Visualization

Background:

  • Developed a biomedical database.
  • Aimed to create a generic database front-end with knowledge discovery and analysis features.
  • Focused on human-oriented data representation and a closed loop of data query, exploration, visualization, and analysis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Introduce a non-task-specific database front-end.
  • Incorporate a novel visualization strategy and built-in analysis functionalities.
  • Facilitate data mining and integration of distinct data types.

Main Methods:

  • Developed a web-based system named d-matrix.
  • Implemented a visualization strategy using matrices of colored boxes representing data quality.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Enabled drill-down capabilities for granular data display.
  • Integrated context-sensitive categorization, hierarchical sorting, and statistical analysis.
  • Main Results:

    • Introduced d-matrix, a versatile, web-based database front-end.
    • Utilized a matrix visualization where box colors indicate data quality.
    • Achieved granular data display with drill-down functionality.
    • Provided context-sensitive categorization, hierarchical sorting, and statistical analysis features.

    Conclusions:

    • d-matrix facilitates data mining through high human-computer interactivity.
    • The presented strategy is effective for general use.
    • Particularly useful for integrating distinct data types like phenotypical and molecular data.
