Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Pathology
  • Canine Medicine
  • Amyloidosis Research

Background:

  • Primary diffuse tracheobronchial amyloidosis is a rare condition.
  • Amyloidosis involves the abnormal deposition of proteins in tissues.

Observation:

  • An 11-year-old Akita dog presented with a chronic, non-productive cough.
  • Necropsy revealed eosinophilic hyalinized deposits in the trachea and bronchi.

Findings:

  • Congo red staining showed apple-green birefringence, indicative of amyloid.
  • Potassium permanganate treatment confirmed AL-type amyloid.
  • Electron microscopy revealed amyloid fibrils measuring 9.5-10.5 nm.

Implications:

  • This case expands the known spectrum of amyloidosis in dogs.
