Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Epidemiology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer death globally and is increasingly prevalent in India.
  • It is now the most common malignancy in males in many Indian hospitals, surpassing oropharyngeal cancer.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To conduct a systematic review of published studies on lung cancer in India.
  • To analyze the epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of lung cancer within the Indian context.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review of published literature on lung cancer in India.
  • Inclusion of relevant international literature for comparative analysis.

Main Results:

  • Smoking is a primary driver of the lung cancer epidemic in India.
  • While squamous cell carcinoma remains common, adenocarcinoma incidence is rising. Other contributing factors include occupational carcinogen exposure, indoor air pollution, and diet.
  • Most patients present with advanced disease, making surgery unsuitable. Chemotherapy combined with radiation improves survival and quality of life, with newer drugs offering better efficacy-toxicity profiles.

Conclusions:

  • India faces a substantial lung cancer burden due to its large population.
  • Implementing strong anti-smoking initiatives is essential to mitigate lung cancer's impact.
