Summary

Diabetes mellitus significantly alters blood rheology, particularly in patients with microangiopathy. Reduced erythrocyte deformability and increased plasma viscosity correlate with disease severity and complications like retinopathy and nephropathy.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology and Metabolism
  • Hematology
  • Vascular Biology

Background:

  • Diabetes mellitus is associated with microvascular complications.
  • Alterations in blood rheology may contribute to diabetic complications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate rheological changes in patients with diabetes mellitus.
  • To correlate these changes with the presence and severity of diabetic microangiopathy.

Main Methods:

  • Assessed plasma viscosity, erythrocyte deformability, erythrocyte adhesion, fibrinogen, and hematocrit.
  • Studied 56 patients with diabetes mellitus, including 28 with diabetic microangiopathy (Type 1 and Type 2).

Main Results:

  • Patients with microangiopathy exhibited more pronounced rheological changes.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Increased thrombocyte adhesion, decreased erythrocyte deformability, and elevated plasma viscosity were observed in microangiopathic patients.
  • Conclusions:

    • Decreased erythrocyte deformability correlates with diabetic microangiopathy severity, especially in proliferative retinopathy or nephropathy.
    • Increased platelet adhesion suggests a role in microangiopathic pathogenesis.
    • Elevated plasma viscosity contributes to diabetic nephropathy and polyneuropathy.
