    Area of Science:

    • Immunology
    • Nephrology
    • Endocrinology

    Background:

    • Partial lipodystrophy is a rare disorder characterized by selective loss of adipose tissue.
    • Early identification of associated complications is crucial for patient management.

    Observation:

    • A 9-year-old female presented with a 2-year history of severe facial subcutaneous fat atrophy.
    • Past medical history included a self-limited episode of jaundice and mild fever.

    Findings:

    • Laboratory results showed significantly low serum complement C3 levels with normal C4.
    • Renal function tests were within normal limits at presentation.

    Implications:

    • Low C3 levels in partial lipodystrophy may indicate an increased risk of renal insufficiency.
    • Patients with partial lipodystrophy might be more susceptible to kidney failure, particularly after events like pregnancy or oral contraceptive use.
