Summary

Insulin injection pen devices (IIPD) are generally preferred over vial and syringe (VS) methods by both insulin users and non-users. Social acceptability strongly predicts IIPD preference, while ease of use and activity interference are key for VS preference discussions.

Background:

  • Patient preferences for insulin delivery devices, specifically vial and syringe (VS) versus insulin injection pen devices (IIPD), are not well-established between current insulin users and non-users.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate and compare the preferences for vial and syringe (VS) versus insulin injection pen devices (IIPD) among current insulin users and non-users.
  • To identify key attributes influencing device preference in different patient groups.

Main Methods:

  • A mail survey was administered to US residents with type 1 or 2 diabetes mellitus.
  • Respondents completed a 19-item questionnaire assessing expectations of VS and IIPD attributes on a 5-point Likert scale.

    • For current insulin users, social acceptability and ease of use predicted VS preference. For non-users, discussions about VS should highlight activity interference and ease of use.
