Summary

Lupus erythematosus tumidus (LET) is a rare skin condition. This study describes 15 Thai cases, finding it more common in women, with less frequent photosensitivity than previously reported.

Background:

  • Lupus erythematosus tumidus (LET) is a rare chronic cutaneous lupus variant.
  • Characterized by succulent, erythematous plaques on sun-exposed areas.
  • Distinguished histopathologically by the absence of dermo-epidermal junction and epidermal alterations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the clinical and pathological features of 15 Lupus erythematosus tumidus cases from Thailand.
  • To compare findings with previous reports.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 15 LET patients diagnosed between 1995-2002.
  • Analysis of clinical manifestations, laboratory data, direct immunofluorescence, phototesting, histopathology, clinical course, and treatment.

  • 15 patients (10 female, 5 male), mean age 38.8 years; lesions common on face and trunk.
  • Negative direct immunofluorescence; 5/10 patients showed photosensitivity (UVA/UVB or UVA).
  • One patient had concomitant discoid lupus; two developed systemic involvement. Chloroquine phosphate and methotrexate were effective treatments.

Conclusions:

  • LET in this cohort exhibited characteristic features.
  • LET was more common in women, with lower photosensitivity rates than previously reported.
  • Two patients developed systemic involvement, highlighting the potential for disease progression.
