Summary

Congenital trypanosomiasis is a rare disease that can be mistaken for other conditions. This case highlights challenges in diagnosis and management, with the infant ultimately succumbing to a nosocomial infection.

Background:

Congenital trypanosomiasis is a rare parasitic infection transmitted from mother to child.
Historically documented cases provide limited data for current clinical practice.
The disease may be underdiagnosed due to its rarity and resemblance to other febrile illnesses.

Observation:

A case of congenital trypanosomiasis presented with prolonged, intermittent convulsions in an infant.
Maternal death occurred shortly after hospitalization.
The infant showed initial response to suramin and melarsoprol treatment.

Findings:

Immunoglobulin levels (IgA, IgG, IgM) were analyzed in a historical case, showing a decline post-treatment.
Current management requires an interdisciplinary approach with limited laboratory resources.
