Context:

  • Diabetes mellitus and non-Hodgkin lymphoma are significant comorbidities.
  • Steroid immunosuppression is a common treatment modality with potential side effects.
  • Invasive fungal sinusitis is a rare but aggressive complication.

Purpose:

  • To report a case of invasive fungal sinusitis caused by Rhizopus oryzae in a diabetic patient with non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
  • To highlight the diagnostic challenges and clinical presentation of this rare fungal infection.
  • To discuss the treatment outcomes and associated mortality.

Summary:

  • A diabetic patient with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, treated with steroids, presented with severe facial pain and a necrotic nasal lesion.
  • Microscopic examination revealed broad, non-septate hyphae, and cultures isolated Rhizopus oryzae.
