Colchicine treatment significantly reduced elevated interleukin-2 (IL-2) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF) in primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) patients, suggesting a potential mechanism for its therapeutic effects in liver disease.

Background:

  • Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is an autoimmune liver disease with unknown therapeutic mechanisms.
  • Elevated serum levels of interleukin-2 (IL-2) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF) are implicated in various inflammatory conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effect of colchicine on serum IL-2 and TNF levels in PBC patients.
  • To explore the potential role of these cytokines in PBC pathogenesis and colchicine's mechanism of action.

Main Methods:

  • Serum IL-2 and TNF levels were measured in 28 PBC patients before and during treatment with colchicine or placebo.
  • Measurements were compared to normal controls and analyzed in relation to DR4 expression.
